Stay near Porthmeor Beach, St Ives

If you’re drawn to the sound of waves and a proper sea view, Porthmeor is hard to beat.

Set on the Atlantic side of St Ives, this is the town’s surf beach. Wide, open, and always changing with the tide, it’s a place for early morning swims, long sandy walks, and evenings watching the sun drop straight into the sea.

Staying near Porthmeor means you’re close to everything, but with a bit more space and sky. Step out in the morning and you can be on the sand in minutes. Turn the other way and you’re in the heart of St Ives, with its cafés, galleries and harbour just a short stroll away.

What it’s like to stay here

Porthmeor has a rhythm to it.

Mornings are slow and bright, surfers heading out, coffee in hand, the beach still quiet. By midday it’s lively but never overwhelming, and by evening everything softens again as the light changes and people gather to watch the sunset.

You don’t need much of a plan here. A walk along the beach, a swim, something to eat nearby, then back to your place to watch the sky do its thing.

However, if you do feel like making plans, there’s plenty on your doorstep. The surf school on Porthmeor is a great place to get in the water, whether you’re a complete beginner or just brushing up.

For food, you’re well looked after without even leaving the beach. Porthmeor Beach Café is a go-to for relaxed breakfasts, long lunches or an early dinner with a view, while The Fish Shed keeps things simple with fresh, local seafood right by the sand, perfect for something easy after a swim.

Porthmeor is as gentle or as lively as you make it.
